Patriotism

“Breathes there the man, with soul so dead
Who never to himself, hath said
This is my own, My native Land
……Living shall forfeit fair renown
And, doubly, dying shall go down
To the vile dust from whence he sprung
Unwept, unhonoured and unsung.”
(Patriotism, by Sir Walter Scott)

Patriotism is one of the virtues extolled by politicians all over the world. Apparently, a Patriot (apart from being a missile), in these days of increasingly blinkered nationalism, is a person who believes “My country, always right, never wrong”. There is also an immense attack of what I’d like to call the Frog-in-the-well syndrome.
This is one of Swami Vivekananda’s stories. A frog used to live in a well, which was all that he’d ever seen. It was a good life. He satisfied both his wants of food and shelter. One day, his cousin from a river up north decided to visit the frog. The cousin was describing his life in the big river. The frog couldn’t believe his ears, when he heard what he thought were very tall stories. Finally, he couldn’t stand it anymore. he asked his cousin “This river of yours, how big is it?” so, his cousin replied “It is very large”. The frog took a small jump and asked “Is it as wide as this?”. The cousin replied “It is many more times wider than that.” The frog jumped as far as he could and asked the same question. the cousin persisted in telling him that the river was much wider. The frog gave the cousin a very big concession and decided to ask him if the river as big as his well. The cousin laughed and told him that the river was a million times larger than the tiny space he inhabited. The frog was insulted and said “Nothing is larger than my well. I don’t believe your pack of lies. I don’t think there is world outside that is half as big as where I live in..”
Now, this is a story that a politician would love. He (or she) would argue that the frog in the well was a true patriot. He loved his habitat and was prepared to defend its honour. Of course, the question of dying for his well does not arise, but that would be a mere technicality.
The ordinary person, of course, would detect a massive flaw in this reasoning. The fact that the frog hadn’t seen the rest of the world did not mean that there was nothing in the surroundings that was much bigger than his small well. The frog laboured under the delusion that the entire world revolved around him and his pathetic dwelling place. Unfortunately, in these times, that remains the problem with the vast majority of 6 billion humans walking this planet. The world may have become smaller, boundaries may have been erased in all but the minds of governments, but the mind of the “true patriot” remains closed to the notions of other cultures, other races, other mindsets, opinions and views.
At this juncture, we must pause to analyse and sift the rights from the wrongs. Have you been turning a blind eye when your nation did something detrimental to the cause of world peace? Do you support your “statesmen” in whatever policies they undertake, without reading the finer print or caring to know what other viewpoints are? Are the media that give you the information about the “world beyond the well” biased? Moreover, do you believe every word uttered in them? Do you have nothing but contempt for people who hold viewpoints opposed to your own or which challenge those of the government? If you have answered yes to three or more, you have been stricken by this malaise.
The question begging to be asked is “Is this true blue patriotism after all?”
Love, they say is blind. But, patriotism does not necessarily equate to closing your eyes and learning by rote the official answer to every criticism levelled against you as a nation. Nor does it entail waving the flag around during cricket matches, chanting “We will rock you” on the top of your voices. This does not mean that, as a nation, we must not present a united front and stand behind all the choices that the country makes, but the crux of the whole matter is, how detrimental will it be to the interests of the world? Are these decisions based on objective reasoning, rather than momentary lapses in judgement caused by excessive sentimentality?
The 21st century demands, not archaic devotion to old concepts, but a hope for the new future. It declines to suffer fools refusing to shake off the musty cobwebs of “a glorious past” and making grandiose & shameless plans to bring the country back full circle to the Dark Ages. “No man is an island to himself” and no country can afford to stand alone surrounded by the ocean of adverse world opinion.
A true patriot, then, should be farseeing, without the most common of virtues, viz hindsight. He should be objective and reasonable, willing to lend an ear and open his heart to the opinions of other nationalities, however uncomplimentary and contrary they might be to the beliefs he has held for so long. His eyes should be open to events happening outside his “well”, and his opinions should not be made on a whim, but be back by concrete evidence. Once formed, they should not be swayed by gentle winds of opinion but hold its own against storms of criticisms, unless, of course, those storms do contain a nugget of truth. Above all, he should not be afraid to speak his mind, regardless of consequences.
A true patriot is a citizen of the planet he inhabits, first and foremost. Fly your flag if you must, but wear the badge of your humanity with pride. Nature treats every country with the same respect. It is time that every patriot did the same. The hope of this world is, as Tagore immortalised in Geetanjali:
“Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high
Where knowledge is free
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments
By narrow domestic walls
Where words come out from the depth of truth
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way Into the dreary desert sand of dead habit”

My sentiments exactly…i don’t know why we even bother with countries…in a perfect world, everyone would be concerned about their own interest and not anyone else’s, that would make people more responsible….

…or have I just gone barking up the wrong tree??

Way to go Shrutz!!!!! This is an awesome blog!!! Keep it up!!! Might i also add that a true patriot need not know his mother tongue? Ummm …Guys easy..easy there…Alright, i’m learning the language but hey, give me time…I’m still Indian even though i dont know the language!!!!!

    Imagine there’s no countries,
    It isnt hard to do,
Nothing to kill or die for,
    No religion too,
    Imagine all the people
    living life in peace…

“it is’nt hard to do”…? ,we cant even possibly think of such a dumb idea, boundaries r very much needed for sustaining peace.Diversities man…the way of life is different. And just think of what would happen ,if there were no “countries” ,then definitely wars would take place for the most resources abundant places, and religion is very much needed too,the basics of all religion is to make man a social animal.

The patriotism u r sayin ,doesnt exist now.We Indians r pathetic good for nothing ********.We are just talk nothing else.Patriotism is what we see in china, japan ,..well all other places except here.We could have been one of the most advanced nations in the world ,if it wasnt for the self centered ******* who went to serve other ********* nations. At present almost every students wish is to settle abroad.

If we think of it in terms of evolution, the emergence of social groups may have coalesced into kingdoms or countries. If man had been a loner like the tiger or the occasional Cheetah, we may not have evolved as ‘social’ animals. Going by which, patriotism may be percieved as an effect of human evolution.

There are different degrees of patriotism. I, for example, am the rather narrow-minded patriot: I would defend my friends and my immediate family, even if they need protection against punishment they rightly deserve, but would probably go no further. The feeling is the same, but the magnitude is different. I think all of us have the feeling in us, to some extent or the other.

  7. Aravind.V

Patriotism by definition of the language is the love for ones country. Or the feeling of belonging to one country.
This is because as humans we classify whatever we sense around us. The classifications are many. What these help us to do is interact with a definite pattern towards each of these objects. Here “objects” take on a very loose definition.
So in social structures there are different classifications. Like racially, geographically, politically, economically, etc.

So what does this all have to do with patriotism. Its just a way of saying that they belong. Thats trying to identify themselves with a larger group for which they think has a larger cause. Everything burns down to your significance in the whole picture.

Its the inability of everyone to identify with the larger group as they being humans that led to the need for nations and further subdivision.
And Till humans are there they will classify anything and everything. Everyone does because its the way we think.

I don’t think Man is a social animal..man is an animal that has the brains to realize when cooperating with other members of its own species is good for it..and for that matter, when eliminating them is better…besides..you don’t need countries to protect your differences..look at India..the world’s largest conglomeration of differences and its still one big (happy?) country..the whole point is..if I mind my own business..and you mind your own, we’ll both be happy…and religion..religion isn’t something that makes man a social animal..religion nowadays is just something that allows man burn/rape/pillage/murder other people in piety. True religion would be best served if it is practised for your own good..for the peace of mind that it brings you and you alone…not for the effect it has on other people or for the overall good of the people or anything like that…just think it over..

As the person responsible for the discussion that seems to have popped up, I’d like to put in my two cent’s worth..
Some of Ayn Rand’s statements I agree with (or as much as I got from reading The Fountainhead), and they are correct… to a degree, but her brand of capitalism will not work in this world.
    (@Sam… For Shame! *looks angelic*)
    @ashok PLAGIARISM!!
Now, if you say “good fences make good neighbours” which is basically what most people ARE saying, I’d like to drive home this point… Israel-and all Arab countries… closer home, India-Pakistan.
Ryan, patriotism also means that you may speak up for what you believe is right/wrong about your country, but calling them names just shows you are confused…
Man can be social or anti-social, but I believe his focus is always limited to his immediate surroundings, which is not to say it’s a bad thing, if I can borrow Amit’s argument.
Countries needn’t be necessary, if the European Union can show an example, but then they MAY be as well… Case by case basis, you think?
    Hell, I am confused now!

I think we, the “NexGen” generation (or whatever the media calls it these days) are the strongest critics of India and yet the future as well.

I loved the Special Report section on “Shoonya to Stardom” in Times of India on Mar 20 about how Indians are doing amazing research *in* India…

Ok, coming back to topic, I think we are really better off than most people out there (Americans come to mind) who have closed their eyes to the outside world, literally.

But in today’s world, does anybody care about patriotism anymore? The fact that Swades wasn’t a box office success was a really bad sign as far as I’m concerned.

Snap outta this fairy tale dream ,think a little more practical.Just think what all would have happened if the whole world was a single country and anyone and every1 has a right to live whereever they want…extremities rises ,this is when “survival of the fittest” really comes in.No one would want to live in downtrodden places ,the poor would be desolated , religional and regional practices are another problem .And just look at the United States of INDIA 😀 ,there r rivalries btw them .

And about me calling names ,..i am not confused ,just look at the attitude of the indians ,there r only a few who would try to make india a better place instead of go lookin for better places ,every1 are self centered. The “Next Gen” the future of India would give their kidney to go abroad and settle there.A interesting fact i saw in orkut was topics like patriotism and the people who debates fiercely against anti patriotist r either working abroad or is tryin for a citizenship there

I am an independent republic. I have my own flag, anthem, constitution, and a better foreign policy than most nations. I am currently looking for a small patch of land, preferably a island paradise in the Pacific to call my own. Contact 9895826608 if you have an island to sell.

**Age Of Empires gives me strange ideas…..

  13. Amit

    Hmm..I’m all for capitalism…here’s why…

Most ideas like socialism and communism(definitely)tend to spread mediocrity around and bring everyone to the lowest common denominator possible, rather than uplift the ones who work well or who are willing to work wel..what do those people have to look forward to..it doesnt matter how much better or more you work..you’ll get as much dinner as the lazy whiner who sits around comlaining…its a shame, but its sad that many people actually plump for those..

@Inspiration – Gee…so what if extremities arise..what if there are desolated areas?? Why do we automatically think that extremities are bad?? Why do most people “aspire” to anything?? Why do we need money?? can’t you put everything down to extremities?? I need a merc coz my neighbour’s got one..show me a land where noone’s got a merc, and where i don’t know what a merc is..where I’m completely satisfied with the way I live, and I’ll show you a guy who doesn’t know what he’s living for..My Commandment No. 1: Never be satisfied with what you have…the day you do would be the day you die.

Desolate areas?? So what?? Its happening on a smaller scale anyway…people rushing to cities in search of work…everything balances out in the end..reaches a sort of natural equilibrium…consider this..
“Lots of people come to city…unemployment in city rises..pretty soon, there’s a shortage of peopl in the villages..people rush back to the villages..now there shortage of work in the city..so on and so forth until you reach a sort of equilibrium”..of course, it isn’t completely perfect..i’m not considering the great Indian pastime of making babies..ie population rise..i’ll factor it in…but somehow I feel it will all even out in the end…it happened during the Industrial revolution in most of the West…would they rather turn the clock back?? I don’t think so…most of these ideas aren’t fully formed..i generally gestate on them…chew the cud sort of, before I let them loose..but i just couldn’t stop myself this time…

btw…this is turning into a lovely fight…hurray for controversies!! God bless you Shrutz for providing us with the battleground…

One other thing..Shrutz..you’ve gotto read Atlas Shrugged..i felt that its the better of the two..besides..Fountainhead gets a bit (dare I say it? 😉 )…boring…in the middle..

And finally..fly, if someone does contact you about the island in the Pacific..do let me know too..i wouldn’t mind one myself 😉

Ultimately, its down to the individual to decide where their loyalties lie, or if they have any at all. Some people don’t even see it as a question of loyalty, just as an issue of where they can best use their skills to the most effect, and to live on their terms in an environment conducive to them. It is hardly my place to tell someone else where to stay and how to live. Patriotism is a noble ideal, but applied too myopically, it becomes a chain by which people are bound, not free to go out into the world and find a place to call their own. The world works because peeople are on the move, building, living, moving on, generation after generation. Reserve the right to find your own way.

  17. Amit

Basically…this is beginning to become something like a debate on globalization. Do check out these sites that can put the thing in words far better than i can

link and The wikipedia article..though there’s some doubt as to the accurate definition of the term capitalism..

I admit that the previous comment i made does sound idiotic..but let me explain…this is going to be one very long comment…perk up “Inspiration” and listen well…

    1) desolate areas:: let me make my example more clear…people rush to cities for work…its because of the availability of employment..not directly due to the availability of resources…people come over to the city seeking employment…many are employed..many are not…the resources that people need like energy and food are not produced at these so called enriched areas..they’re produced at other places..lets see..a lot of people at the cities..meaning food requirements increase as more people need food…farms grow bigger…more labour needed…some people move towards the farms for work…more energy requirements…the refineries increase capacity…more workers needed there…more people get employed…industries boom…now..suppose, some new industry pops up, like the IT services industry did in India, that isn’t so fussy about access to the major roads and transport etc etc as long as it gets a few necessary resources..say a good telecommunications system..in a capitalist economy, someone will spot the great profits to be had..buy land for cheap in those desolate areas of yours and give them good access to the resources they need…killer profit..

really, if you lived in India about 50 years ago and told everyone that bombay or for that matter bangalore will have as many people as it does now, you’d be making those same arguments that you are making now…only to be proved wrong..

and finally, i’m not saying there won’t be problems in cities…but that’s what man uses his head for right?? To change his environment so that he can live better…just look at the major cities like Tokyo and London..funny, but unlike you’re dire predictions, its not all “rich eat poor” bonhomie…i’d suggest you think something over before making a stand for it..

and finally..about the rich:poor divide, i quote from the wikipedia entry..
“A problem with using “distribution of wealth” as a standard to measure economic systems is that such a standard can produce seemingly irrational judgments. Under the “distribution of wealth” standard, a system where everyone has nothing is judged as equal to a system where everyone has enormous wealth since the distribution of wealth in the two systems is equal. The thing is Capitalist economics are not zero-sum games and that more wealth for most people is actually “created” through innovation, and risk-taking. And that inequality may be necessary in this process.” Its the innovators and risk-takers who make money and wealth trickles down based on your ability, not based on your need, like in communist countries. Thats more fair isnt it?

About the Merc: Alright i was a bit hurried on this one…its like this..why do i work..because i want to earn money, and live in comfort..what defines comfort for me?? The highest level of comfort in my er..okay..village..would be the natural referance point..yes? Suppose everyone in the village lives on the same level of comfort or whatever…why should i work harder?? I’m already as comfortable as can be..nothing to gain..i don’t need to make my work more efficient..so what if by using better work practices, i can save more money…why do i need that extra money??..Now if i had to catch up with the Jones’, that would be different!! Unless there’s competition, life would be a sort of stasis..going on in the same way as it has for hundreds of thousands of years..no advancement, no nothing…but still, some guys would perhaps call it utopia..but thats when a civilization starts declining..thats when people don’t care about new things anymore..when traditions become all important..when change is bad….and competition does not apply only in the case of companies..it also applies in the case of people…unless i have something to fight against..unless i have a reason to maintain my social position, or to advance it, i will not bother working for it..but as i said, for some people, that would be the perfect world, where everyone can be brought down to the level of their own mediocrity…the lowest common denominator..

I don’t need to explain your third point as I believe i’ve exaplined it already as a part of the first..

and finally, i’ll just skip the bad words at the end, because i feel that my belief’s are mine and not something that i need to force down your throat, accept them if you want, or reject them..i’ll just make sure that you havn’t misunderstood them…

  18. Amit

Finally…patriotism is misplaced in a world that is becoming globalized…the true diehard patriot wouldn’t even be typing stuff here on this blog..why, the blog is a “Western” idea..that happened to sprout up on another “Western” idea..the internet…and you’re typing this using the keyboard of your computer..and that too in English!!..all of which were western ideas initially…so there..i think this discusion is partial..true patriots wouldn’t even be here to discuss this issue..they don’t stand a chance with noone to represent them…maybe we should begin our own desi version of the internet and keep out all the foreigners..keeping with the good fences make good neighbours policy that “patriots” seem to love…

  19. Shrutz

Wow… in the heat of the debate, the original point of the blog has been lost…
Okay screw the original point of the blog.
Let’s examine the merits of the points that have been raised. (hmm I was just seeing if I could say it with a straight face).
Let’s face it, patriotism is NOT
    1) killing others
    2) working for MNCs
    3) doing the all and sundry things that are done in its name….
Am I patriotic? I guess not, if these definitions (1,2 and 3) are applied
Then about capitalism v/s communism. The driving force behind communism was the ideal that all men (and women) were created equal, so they be paid equally for their work. Did the concept WORK? No. Why was that? Like Amit said, people were aspiring to the lowest common denominator. The rich STILL became richer (the dachas of the rich) and the poor became poorer. Leave Mercs, most ordinary cars had waiting lists that could encircle half the globe if the people were placed end to end.
    So, DID communism work? No.
Now, take capitalism. The word we are most familiar in these times : globalisation..
Is globalisation SUCH a bad thing? I don’t think so. India may be a land of villages, but if competitive capitalism drives her, things can be achieved. Of course, we will still mutter about **##@&@ idiots who don’t #*$&% know what to do 😉 (PS: Swaroop I LOVED Swades!)
It IS a rather steep learning curve, but the country is young. We must forgive her mistakes and try to move on.
Like it or not, capitalism is the truth of the day, and no matter what, you can’t wish it away. So, you can either sink or swim.
Truth is, competition (or keeping up with the Joneses is not a wholly unIndian concept, if you think about it.. Witness the hundreds of sitcoms which feature “Did you see what Mrs. Saxena got?”)
Am I proud to be Indian? Yes. Am I proud of the mess our politicians land us in?… You decide!

  20. Amit

I’d like to add one more small point..people bitch about how money power is the only power in capitalist countries…thats the way it must be..it must be the only power…in communist countries, you have the “power of the pull”, where your power depends on how many higher up people you know, and how many people are willing to grant you favours…(you see this quite a lot in our society too..)….atleast, when it comes to money, everyone gets a chance to make it…but only the scheming unworthy backstabbers generally get good at the power of the pull…if you want an example, i’d suggest you take a look at our politicians for one…I’m not saying they’re all bad..but it does seem that thats the sort of people the system encourages….

There’s a concept called Laissez-Faire capitalism..at the fundamental level, capitalism would be the best for people who are willing to get up and get things done..ie people who create “Change”…while communism is the perfect system for the people who would prefer to sit on their asses whining about their needs rather than doing anything about it, ie the people who worship “Stasis”….capitalism rewards people on the basis of how good they work…(survival of the fittest perhaps…but what gives the unhealthy the right to survive by robbing the healthy??) Communism does not care if people work..it just treats the hardest worker among the people and the saddest whiner equally..the whole concept is so ugly! It goes against all the ideas of justice that we have been taught!

  21. Densel Mayor

Goodness! There’s going to be an outbreak of violence here! I do wish ‘inspiration’ had been a little more polite and a little less incisive in his first comment and then we probably wouldn’t have all this mud-slinging. On second thought, naaaah, we’d probably still have it. Patriotism for some reason gets everyone riled up. Which is weird because I’ve really never met any person from a developing country who *did not* criticise his countrymen about their ‘patriotism’.

    Deja Vu …more stupidity!!

u know what rhymes with farming…suicides ,havent u started readin the newspapers yet ? The farmers who got it big time have already started more ‘dependable’ business, and btw i am not referring villages as desolate areas, wat i meant is market thrives where the rich IS, if the whole world is united there still will be 2 countries ,the rich mans country (developed ,good habitual places) and the poor man’s country.
i will give u just one example ,consider india pakistan unite ,do u think we could be able to mingle with the pakis ,their culture ,their ideologies are so different from us and the an imaginary boundary will still seperate us,and they will get kashmir (call me a fanatic ,i dont care),In india there are rivalries between the states itself, and u r talkin about uniting the whole world.

I am not talkin about communalism and BTW “Communism does not care if people work..it just treats the hardest worker among the people and the saddest whiner equally.” ,dude dont comment on something u r not sure about ,communalism DO talk about equality ,and dont misconcept it,i dont wanna elaborate on this basically coz i dont know the whole thing and no point explaining it to u.
